The Truth About Buck

Former President Truman
had a plaque on his desk that proclaimed,
The Buck Stops Here,
and all took it to mean that the President
had the final responsibility for all things.

But I knew differently.
The buck referred to in all of Truman's
mentions was Jerry "The Buck" Jarvis,
a small time card mechanic
and Truman's boyhood friend.

Came up from Springfield
one or two times a year and they'd talk
mostly about how to creatively substitute
fertilizer for shit in all of the President's
speeches to the Midwest farmer. 

Lots of things between these two guys;
but their big private joke was the plaque.
They had one silly moment over this each
time Buck visited the White House.
